DOGLIANI 'SAN LUIGI' MARZIANO ABBONA 2023 DESCRIPTION

Dogliani 'San Luigi' is a typical and pleasant expression of the Dolcetto grape variety produced by the Piedmontese winery Marziano Abbona, based in the municipality of Dogliani. The Dolcetto grape, probably originating in Basso Piemonte, where it has been cultivated for centuries, owes its name to the characteristic low acidity of the wine to which it gives rise, which is in fact 'sweeter' than those made from Barbera or Nebbiolo, other important Langa varieties. A second hypothesis refers instead to the Piedmontese dialect term 'dosset', which indicates a hump or hill. Instead, the appellation 'San Luigi' derives from the name of the hamlet where the vineyards are located, from which this label originated with the 1978 vintage.

Marziano Abbona Dogliani 'San Luigi' is a 100% Dolcetto cultivated on silty soils formed by the so-called Lequio Formation, characterised by the presence of grey calcareous marls alternating with layers of sand or sandstone. The vines, with an average age of almost 40 years, are located between 390 and 430 metres above sea level and are cultivated organically. In the cellar, the grapes are first destemmed and crushed, with the must then transferred into stainless steel tanks for spontaneous alcoholic fermentation at a controlled temperature. Malolactic fermentation and several months of ageing take place in the same type of wine vats.
Marziano Abbona's Dogliani 'San Luigi' has a ruby red colour with violet reflections. Fruity and fragrant on the nose, described by perceptions of blackberry and cherry that blend with floral memories. The taste is full-bodied and balanced, dry and pleasant, with ripe tannins and a typically almondy finish. A perfect everyday red wine, to be served slightly chilled.
