Don Julio

Don Julio is a Mexican brand that for over 80 years has been dedicated to the production of high-quality tequila in the state of Jalisco, the undisputed home of this world-famous distillate. The origins of the distillery date back to the year 1942, when the then 17-year-old Don Julio Gonzalez, armed with passion and determination, started a tequila production with the support of a local entrepreneur. Thus was born the La Primavera distillery, located on the Jalisco plateau, driven by Don Julio's desire to produce a great tequila. For 40 years he dedicated himself to agave cultivation and tequila production, lovingly caring for each plant. During his long activity, Don Julio has been joined by 3 generations of the Jimador family, skilled agave growers and pickers. Today, the Don Julio brand, which is the number one tequila brand by value, is owned by Diageo, a major British beverage group.

Don Julio brand tequilas originate from only Weber blue agave grown on the Jalisco plateau, where the altitude is close to 2,000 metres above sea level and the soils are clayey of a volcanic nature, rich in mineral elements. The climate of the area is rather extreme, characterised by hot days and cool nights, which is optimal for growing agave. Each plant is harvested by hand when it has reached full maturity and is then cleaned to obtain the sugar core, the so-called piña. This is then cooked in brick ovens and subsequently ground to extract the sugar-rich juice, which undergoes alcoholic fermentation for a few days. This is followed by a double distillation of the fermented product in stills and finally, in the Añejo or Reposado versions, ageing in American white oak barrels.

The tequilas of the Don Julio brand are appreciated for their high quality and noteworthy typicity, a consequence of the experience and passion on which the distillery is founded. The selection includes tequilas in the Blanco, Reposado and Añejo versions, as well as a few limited editions, all of which highlight the salient characteristics of the category.
