Through a production style completely outside the norm, the Australian wine reality Poppelvej crafts artisanal wines with eccentric character, mostly from French varieties, but also Italian and German ones. We are in McLaren Vale, South Australia, less than 50 kilometers south of the city of Adelaide, in a charming territory characterized by a Mediterranean climate ideal for viticulture. Here, the Danish Uffe Deichmann started his project in 2015 after working as a sommelier in Copenhagen, with the support of his brother Jens, who travels back and forth between Europe and Australia to help him in the vineyard and cellar. As for the curious name Poppelvej, it derives from the name of the Danish street where Uffe grew up, located in the town of Hundested.

Producer Uffe of Poppelvej produces his wines with grapes grown according to sustainable practices in vineyards scattered across McLaren Vale and Adelaide Hills, occupied by a wide and diverse range of varieties, including Pinot Noir, Teroldego, Grenache, Mourvedre, Chardonnay, Riesling, Gewurztraminer, Greco, Pinot Meunier, Chenin Blanc, and Viognier. In the cellar, any oenological sophistication is banned, with foot stomping and spontaneous fermentations carried out solely with the intervention of indigenous yeasts, often whole-cluster and with prolonged macerations even for white grapes. The entire processing is conducted in a very artisanal manner, completely excluding the use of any additives and oenological aids, except for very low doses of sulfur dioxide, added only when necessary. The wine containers used are diverse, ranging from stainless steel tanks to exhausted wooden barrels, ceramic eggs, and fiberglass tanks.

The production of Poppelvej encapsulates highly varied expressions in style and type, united by exceptional smoothness and liveliness, the result of Uffe's passion and eagerness to experiment. Whether reds, whites, orange, or bottle-fermented, the wines from Poppelvej manage to convey a feeling of carefree joy in the glass.
