The Sagrantino di Montefalco from the Roccafiore winery is the symbolic wine of Umbria. It is a structured, intense, rich, and powerful red, made from an ancient grape variety cultivated for centuries in the Montefalco area. Once, Sagrantino was mainly intended for the production of sweet dessert wines. For a few decades, it has been rediscovered as a great aging red and has carved out a prominent place in the Italian wine scene. Due to its particular tannic characteristics, it is a wine that requires long aging in wood before reaching the right expressive harmony. At the table, it pairs beautifully with braised meats, stews, and game.
The Roccafiore Sagrantino comes from vineyards cultivated in the hilly territory surrounding the small and historic Umbrian village. The vines are trained to a spurred cordon, with a planting density of 5000 vines per hectare, for an average production per hectare of around 70 quintals. The clay-limestone soils and the cool continental climate have proven perfect for the requirements of the Sagrantino, which is grown almost exclusively in Umbria. Sagrantino is a late variety, and the harvest usually takes place in the first weeks of October, depending on the climatic conditions of the year. Fermentation occurs in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, using only indigenous yeasts and skin maceration for about ten days. It rests for a full 18 months in French barriques and large 50-hectoliter Slavonian oak barrels and completes the long aging period with at least another 6 months in the bottle before being released for sale.
The Sagrantino di Roccafiore is a red of great character and personality. A label with a typically gastronomic vocation, which enhances its qualities when paired with important meat dishes. It is one of the longest-lived Italian wines, do not hesitate to leave it in the cellar, even for about ten years, it will give you elegant tertiary evolutions. It presents itself with a very dark ruby red color with violet reflections. On the nose, it recalls the aromas of blackberry and dark berry fruits, hints of underbrush, humus, and memories of oriental spices. On the palate, it immediately shows an important structure, with deep aromas. The tannic texture is dense and prominent, the finish is balanced and very persistent.
