Sancerre

Sancerre

Amid the gentle hills of the Loire Valley lies a small town that has given its name to a white wine of strong territorial character: Sancerre. Made from pure Sauvignon Blanc, it offers a vibrant freshness and a refined and elegant profile, with marked sapidity and minerality, serving as a quintessential example and model for its type. Speaking of the Loire is to talk of white wine, and in these lands, shaped by the Loire River, softened by Atlantic breezes, and composed of silica and chalk soils, this grape variety has given rise to a unique, signature interpretation. Thanks to great producers and ancient traditions, it has become one of the world's most esteemed and well-known wines. Far from the exotic, tropical styles of New Zealand or the intense, seductive expressions of northern Italy, French Sancerre embodies a more delicate version, the most authentic reflection of this treasured and historic terroir.

Sancerre AOC Wine: origins and appellation

The Loire Valley is fertile and lush, with remarkable flora and fauna. Among the noble castles built by past monarchs, the aristocratic gardens of kings, ancient towns, and rolling hills dotted with century-old vineyards flows the legendary Loire River, which gives its name to the entire valley.

The Loire, stretching 1,020 km, is the longest river in France and is recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. It originates in the Gerbier de Jonc Massif in the heart of the Alps and traverses nearly all of France before flowing into the Atlantic Ocean in the northwestern region. Moving inland from its mouth, one encounters various locations that create a sort of wine route, painting this area white by producing high-quality Sancerre wine benchmarks in the global wine scene. In the province of Orleans, two celebrated regions face each other across the river, historically eyeing each other with a spirit of rivalry: Sancerre on the left and Pouilly-Fumé on the right, in a timeless contest.

The Sauvignon vineyards in Sancerre are cultivated on the gentle hills shaped by the river that surrounds the town and extend into the 14 neighbouring municipalities. Situated about 300 meters above sea level, the soils, rich in silica and lime, impart a distinctive mineral note. The excellent potential of the soil is complemented by an oceanic climate characterized by significant temperature variations—very cold in winter and generally warm in summer—that promote the perfect ripening of the grapes.

When combined with the expertise of historic producers and renowned wine houses, the result is nothing short of extraordinary. It gives rise to one of the most iconic French wines, capturing the essence of a grape variety and an entire production. This Sancerre AOC wine is celebrated worldwide for its unique characteristics.

What grape is Sancerre

If you’re wondering what grape is Sancerre, the answer lies in the region’s famed Sauvignon Blanc. The area also produces Sancerre rosé wine and red Sancerre, showcasing the diversity of this beautiful appellation. Sancerre France is indeed a treasure trove for wine lovers!

A Legendary Expression: Profile and Pairings with Sancerre

This legendary Sancerre white wine is renowned for its aromatic and flavour complexity and for being the most authentic face of this historic region. Made from pure Sancerre grape (Sauvignon Blanc), it is often refined in steel and concrete to preserve the fruit's integrity. It presents a brilliant straw-yellow color, with good clarity and a light concentration. On the nose, it delicately unfolds light and fragrant notes of citrus, crunchy white-fleshed fruit, elderflower, and herbal balsamic hints, accompanied by characteristic mineral accents. A pleasant saline note often enriches the aroma, evoking thoughts of the ocean's edge.

Indulge in the exquisite taste of Sancerre wine. It is driven by sublime freshness that defines each sip, leading to a pleasantly persistent finish. The wine is juicy, elegant, smooth, light, and irresistibly drinkable—sometimes creamier and more structured, yet never too intense or heavy, always showcasing its unparalleled crystalline class. A prime example is the Sancerre by Alphonse Mellot, which faithfully embodies all the distinctive traits of this type.

The Loire Valley is also home to a culinary tradition and exceptional quality products with unique and original flavours. The best Sancerre pairings reflect the local gastronomic tradition, including:

  • Fresh goat cheeses, such as Crottin de Chavignol, the most famous in the area
  • Savoury crêpes
  • Eel with peas
  • Trout with herbs
  • Vegetables baked in béchamel
  • Freshwater fish soups
  • Leek quiches
  • Oysters and seafood salads

For culinary enthusiasts, we also recommend trying Sancerre with raw fish dishes from Eastern cuisine, such as:

  • Sushi and sashimi
  • Fish tartare
  • Carpaccio
