Triple A Wines

Agriculturalists, Artisans and Artists: this is the definition of Triple A wine producers coined by Luca Gargano, president of the Velier distribution company. This was a personal and activist reaction against the phenomenon of the standardisation of taste, which, in his view, was desired by the large wine companies and industries. Since 2001, a commercial catalogue of excellence has been developed, selecting products that perfectly express the peculiarities of the grape variety, the impact of the production area and the personality of the producer. Today, the labels in the catalogue, united by a programmatic protocol manifesto, are increasingly numerous, while still retaining the disruptive and unconventional strength of their origins. These enological expressions, in the words of Luca Gargano, make "the tongue click and the pupil shine" and encompass "millions of feelings and gestures that occurred in the vineyard".

Resistance, Culture and Modernity of the Agricultural World

According to the definition of Luca Gargano of Velier, AAA wines originate from producers who embody the three figures of Agriculturist, Artisan and Artist. It is only from these three figures that wines of excellence are born, which are able to preserve the typicality of the territory and evolve over time. This definition, accompanied by the elaboration of a set of guidelines in 2001, was born from a personal reaction, that is still carried on today, against that process of productive and organoleptic standardisation wanted by the big industries.

Triple A wines challenge this by offering an iconic and authoritative range of artisanal wines, representing the resistance of the authentic agricultural world to the large production companies in the best possible way. At the beginning of this initiative, the producers who joined Velier's catalogue were presented as the last survivors of an ancient and fascinating world. However today, after almost twenty years of commercial activity, the winemakers who have recovered the agricultural methods of their fathers have become increasingly numerous, acquiring authority and becoming essential points of reference for wine lovers all over the world. These include historic Italian producers such as the Pepe Emidio winery, Paradiso di Manfredi and younger producers such as Movia and Arianna Occhipinti, while other international producers such as Chateau Musar and Nicolas Joly have always belonged to the elite of artisanal producers known worldwide.

The Triple A Wine Manifesto and Set of Guidelines

Triple A wine is a brand that has acquired authority, prestige and commercial effectiveness. To explain it to the unfamiliar, the context from which it originates goes beyond the categories of organic and biodynamic, and is integrally linked to the agricultural and rural world of the past. But what are the requirements to become part of the prestigious catalogue? Since 2001, the protocol has taken up the original concept of the three A's:

- The A for Agriculturist, or farmer, indicates cultivating a vineyard directly, establishing a close relationship with the land and using only traditional, non-invasive agronomic interventions

- The A for Artisan indicates the technical skills needed to implement a traditional production process, without distorting the characteristics of the grapes or altering the spontaneity of the product

- The A for Artist indicates a creative sensibility, based on work and ideas, needed in order to interpret the territory, the vintage and the vine variety in the best possible way, allowing the production to benefit from the human touch.

These definitions include, within them, other requirements, inseparably linked to an artisanal approach both in the vineyard and in the cellar. The producers of Triple A wine must, for example, respect the natural cycles of the vine without forcing it, avoid adding chemical additives, use only indigenous yeasts for fermentation and avoid any corrective intervention to modify the sensory character of the production.

By respecting these requirements, any wine can potentially become part of this selection, which today includes very different products from all over the world, either from rare, indigenous vines or from international varieties such as Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Merlot and many others. They are undoubtedly territorial specialities with an old-fashioned charm, increasingly favoured by expert and curious tasters in search of unique and controversial flavours. Because of their rural and fundamentalist character, they can often confuse beginners and less experienced tasters.
