BAROLO RISERVA 'MONPRIVATO CA'D MORISSIO' GIUSEPPE MASCARELLO 2012 DESCRIPTION

Giuseppe Mascarello's Barolo Riserva "Ca'd Morissio" is the quintessence of the personality of a grape variety, a wine and a tradition. It's a wonderful expression of Barolo's exceptional qualities of elegance and finesse, the exquisite complexity of which is brought out through the choice of vinification as a Riserva. In addition, the grapes used come from a Cru that has been included, by scholars, in the list of the 11 first-class historic vineyards in the history of Barolo. Elegance within elegance, finesse within finesse and quality within quality. Rooted in the territory of Castiglione Falletto, the winery is one of the historical faces of local winemaking and, probably, of Langhe as a whole.

Riserva "Ca'd Morissio" originates from the famous and important Cru Monprivato, more precisely in the part called "Cascina Mascarello" or, in the local dialect, "Ca'd Morissio." The vineyard, owned by the Mascarello family, is located in the municipality of Castiglione Falletto and covers an area of 6 hectares at an altitude of 280 meters above sea level. The soil is of Miocene origin dating back to the Helvetian period, defined by silty-clay marls of good structure and rich in active limestone. The abundance of some particular elements in the soil and the exposure of the vines with a southwest orientation make it possible to obtain grapes with an enormous expressive potential in the wine, which will be recognizable for particular qualities of structure, aromatic finesse, taste persistence, elegance and aging potential. Harvesting is carried out manually with much rigor in order to make an effective selection of the grapes. Fermentation follows the traditional method that involves a very long maceration. Aging takes place inside Slavonian oak barrels of medium capacity and lasts 40 months.

Mascarello "Ca'd Morissio" presents itself to the eye with a garnet red color, enhanced by interesting orange reflections. The nose is broad: red fruit, cherry, currant, raspberry, violet, anise, pepper and other spices. It gradually releases its scents, revealing itself little by little. On the palate it is as austere as it is fascinating in its fine, ethereal personality. The tannin is polished and inserted in a robust body still alive with freshness. "Ca'd Morissio" is an icon not only for Barolo, but for the entire wine world.
