Etna Rosso Giovanni Rosso 2020
Giovanni Rosso's Etna Rosso is a Nerello Mascalese with a broad, soft character. It is produced in Sicily on the northern slope of Mount Etna, from volcanic soils renowned for top quality viticulture. Perfectly balanced between freshness and structure, this red wine, with its juicy and assertive character, has fine, penetrating aromas of violets, bergamot, undergrowth and wet stone, with a hint of white pepper and delicate but well-presented tannins. Its elegance and depth make it an excellent choice to pair with dishes such as filet Wellington, or mushroom soup with crostoni
The Etna Rosso signed by Giovanni Rosso is a pure Nerello Mascalese with a vibrant and penetrating taste, produced on the north-eastern slope of the volcano. Established producers from Langa for generations, the Rosso family embarked in 2016 on an ambitious parallel project on the slopes of Etna, establishing the winery in Solicchiata, a hamlet of the municipality of Castiglione di Sicilia. Here, the Rosso family acquired 14 hectares in one block dedicated to the traditional Etna varieties, which benefit from the peculiar microclimate of this patch of volcanic land.
Giovanni Rosso Etna Rosso comes from only Nerello Mascalese grapes grown in Contrada Montedolce, in the hamlet of Solicchiata in the municipality of Castiglione di Sicilia, at an altitude between 730 and 750 meters above sea level. Here, the vineyard enjoys a cool exposure to the north and north-east and the matrix of sandy lava that characterizes the soil. The harvest is done by hand in October and the grapes are then subjected to a soft pressing operation, followed by the alcoholic fermentation of the must in stainless steel tanks for about 10 days of maceration on the skins, during which daily pump-overs are performed and a délestage is done halfway through.
In the glass, the Etna Rosso from the Giovanni Rosso winery displays an intense ruby red cloak. Very fine and penetrating are the aromas of violet, bergamot, underbrush, and wet stone that characterize the olfactory context, enriched by hints of red fruits, notes of white pepper, and light dry vegetal nuances. Juicy, lively, and progressive taste, characterized by a well-present tannin that contributes to the good depth and overall power along with the decisive and persistent finish. An Etna Rosso capable of comfortably supporting further aging of 5-10 years, if properly stored.
