It is a blend of rums from different vintages aged for an average of about 15 years using the Solera method. The secret of this rum lies in the skilful ability to combine and blend different distillates to achieve the perfect balance and harmony of flavour.
The 15-year-old Gran Reserva is a rum produced by the historic and famous Matusalem distillery, founded in Cuba at the end of the 19th century. The name was chosen in reference to the famous figure from the Old Testament, to emphasise the intention to produce long-aged rum, capable of elevating the Caribbean distillate to the fame of the best in the industry. Following the Cuban Revolution, production was transferred to the Dominican Republic, while maintaining the quality and reputation of the distillery. The rum is made from the processing of top-quality sugar cane molasses. The final product is a blend of different distillates, which are aged for an average of 15 years in oak barrels according to the Solera method, used for the great wines of Jerez. The barrels are stacked in several rows, with the oldest rums at the bottom and the youngest at the top. When the distillate is removed from the lower barrels, the upper ones are filled in a cascade. This ensures that the rum is always particularly complex and harmonious.
