Lagrein 'Sand' Nals Margreid 2023
The Lagrein "Sand" by Nals Margreid is a South Tyrolean red wine from the Bolzano plain, in the Gries area, particularly suited for the successful cultivation of this tenacious and enveloping grape variety: with its dark ruby color, it expresses aromas of dark fruit, sweet spices, balsamic notes, and delicate herbal hints, revealing a fresh and enveloping sip, full-bodied and persistent, with a lively tannic structure.
The “Sand” Lagrein from Nals Margreid is a wine originating from Nalles, in Trentino, a charming village near Bolzano. The diverse and articulated composition of the soil, a heterogeneous microclimate characterized by warm summers, and an excellent sun exposure are fundamental factors for the grapes to reach their best expression. Noteworthy is the particular and expressive architecture chosen for the construction of the winery, the result of Markus Scherer’s project: a perfect integration with the’environment that showcases the stages of grape processing and guides the visitor on an inimitable journey into the world of wine.
The vineyards of the Lagrein grapes from “Sand” Nals Margreid are located in Gries. The soils in this area are sandy, alluvial, and have a pluvial origin; porphyry pervades them, and the peculiarity of being enclosed within the Bolzano basin makes them warm and creates a climate similar to that of Southern Italy. The grapes are hand-picked, followed by a’careful destemming; the must then ferments in steel and during this phase delicate pump-overs are performed. A brief malolactic fermentation is carried out before transferring everything into 40 hl wooden barrels for about seven months.
The Lagrein “Sand” from Nals Margreid strikes the eye with its intense and compact ruby red; the nose is immediately pervaded by the scent of cherries in spirit, blackberry, and licorice roots; the palate is teased by a dense, fresh, and pleasantly tannic taste that is softened by a concluding balsamic note. Excellent paired with lamb meat, but also with the particular aromas of game. A wine suited for family lunches or with friends during celebrations and occasions, discovering in the glass a traditionally innovative production philosophy.
