Piedirosso Campi Flegrei 'Sette Vulcani' Salvatore Martusciello 2023
The Piedirosso Campi Flegrei 'Sette Vulcani' by Salvatore Martusciello is a fragrant and easy-drinking red that finds its maximum expression here, in Campania. One of the oldest varieties in the region, also mentioned by Pliny the Elder, is characterized by its aromas of small red fruits, such as blackberry, sour cherry, and cherry. A perfect wine to pair with stewed fish dishes, but also with delicate white meats!
Gilda and Salvatore Martusciello present the Campi Flegrei Piedirosso ‘Settevulcani’, a pure expression of Piedirosso with a savory and dynamic taste. The ‘Settevulcani’ selection was created to enhance the vineyards of Falanghina and Piedirosso grown on their own roots in the Campi Flegrei area, where the sandy and volcanic nature of the soil has prevented the spread of phylloxera, a dreaded aphid that brought European viticulture to its knees in the second half of the 1800s. Indeed, the solution to counter the insect was to graft the European vine onto American roots, which are resistant to the aphid's bites. The case of Salvatore Martusciello's vineyards grown on their own roots, that is, on their own roots, represents a very rare case.
The Campi Flegrei Piedirosso ‘Settevulcani’ by Salvatore Martusciello is produced with pure Piedirosso grapes from vines grown on their own roots in sandy volcanic soils in the Campi Flegrei area, characterized by a typically Mediterranean climate crossed by the marine breezes blowing from the Gulf of Naples. In the winery, the bunches are vinified in red with alcoholic fermentation in contact with the skins in stainless steel tanks, the same type of wine containers where the mass remains to mature for several months. This is followed by a brief aging in bottle before the final release on the market.
The ‘Settevulcani’ Salvatore Martusciello Piedirosso from the Campi Flegrei is ruby red with slight garnet reflections. The olfactory panorama is described by sensations of small red fruits, such as blackberry, sour cherry, and cherry, which meet spicy hints and evocative mineral notes. Fresh and savory sip, endowed with excellent smoothness also thanks to the delicate tannin.
