Fontefico
The Fontefico winery is situated on the Punta Penna headland, along the Trabocchi Coast in Abruzzo. The winery follows a specific philosophy as its guiding principle: that of showcasing its land. Each wine is produced from a single vineyard, in accordance with a production philosophy that regards the cru as its fundamental unit. La Vigna Bianca with Pecorino and Trebbiano Abruzzese, La Vigna del Pozzo and Il Pàstino with Montepulciano d'Abruzzo, and Le Coste, a steep, south-facing slope where Aglianico grows. Four plots, four distinct characters, a terroir that brooks no approximation.
The Fontefico winery operates organically, relying on the promontory’s microclimate as its primary means of ensuring healthy growth: the cool, salty winds of the Adriatic, in fact, constantly sweep through the rows, keeping them dry. Natural grass cover and green manure nourish the soil and protect the root system during the hottest months. The harvest is strictly manual, with grapes picked into 20-kilo crates and processed within twenty minutes of picking to preserve their quality intact. The selection of the bunches is an integral part of the method, not a mere detail.
On the nose, Fontefico’s wines express vigorous, varietal aromas, with a mineral and salty component that reflects their proximity to the sea and the stony nature of the soils. On the palate, the defining characteristic is freshness, sharp and persistent, underpinned by a structure that varies significantly from plot to plot. Intense and direct expressions of a coastal Abruzzo that is as Mediterranean as it is rugged and wild.
