The Acios da Xesteiriña winery is a very small and young Galician winery dedicated to growing Albariño, the region's most representative variety. The project saw its beginnings in 2019, when the three friends Adrian Guerra, Victor Cardona and Jose Manuel Dominguez decided to start their own winemaking business in Pontevedra, in the Salnés area, within the Rias Baixas appellation. Adrian has managed the Viñoteca Bagos restaurant for more than 10 years, Victor Cardona works in the wine trade while Jose Manuel is an agronomic engineer.
Adrian, Victor and Jose Manuel of the Acios da Xesteiriña estate manage just one hectare of vineyard dedicated exclusively to Albariño, a variety grown on soil formed by a characteristic substrate called "Granodiorito de Sanxenxo," consisting of granite rock. The plants, which are just 2 kilometers from the Atlantic Ocean, are raised according to organic farming principles with very low yields. Alcoholic fermentation takes place spontaneously in steel, without temperature control, while the subsequent aging phase takes place between stainless steel tanks and 225-liter Burgundian oak barrels. The enology adopted by the trio of friends is highly minimalist, and malolactic fermentation is neither blocked nor encouraged, but is allowed to run spontaneously or not depending on the vintage. During the entire process, the use of additives and oenological aids is excluded, except for minimal doses of sulfur dioxide at bottling.
To date, Acios da Xesteiriña makes only one label, a pure Albariño in which the oceanic freshness and minerality donated by the Rias Baixas terroir is perceived. It is a sharp and dynamic interpretation, yet not without balance thanks to the variety's characteristic glyceric softness. The first vintage released was the 2020, and if good mornings are any indication, we can't wait to see the continuation of this winery's journey. Unfortunately, the winery's annual production consists of only a few thousand bottles.
