Schiava 'Hexenbichler' Tramin 2025

The Schiava “Hexenbichler” from the Tramin winery is a summary of Alto Adige, in its red berry expression. Two grape varieties deeply rooted in this territory participate, in different proportions, in the narrative of Alto Adige's winemaking tradition. The watchword of this Schiava – to which a small part of Lagrein is added – is lightness, translated into a fruity character of absolute drinkability. It could be defined as a “companion wine”, as it seems born to bring people together and generate convivial moments, mostly linked to tradition. It’s hard to find something more authentically Alto Adige than this. 

“Hexenbichler” by Tramin is made up of 95% Schiava grapes and a small but significant 5% Lagrein grapes. They come from vineyards located in various hilly areas, positioned at altitudes ranging from 300 to 450 meters above sea level. The soils are of a calcareous type, characterized by a clayey and gravelly composition. The strong temperature variations between the day and night create an optimal condition to determine aromatic finesse in the grapes. After the harvest, the grapes transported to the winery are gently pressed and the resulting must is placed in steel containers to undergo first alcoholic fermentation and then malolactic fermentation. A stay on its own lees of about 7 months in steel makes the wine ready for marketing.

“Hexenbichler” Schiava from Tramin presents in the glass a delicate garnet red color with good transparency. Its bouquet opens with juicy fruity notes reminiscent of wild strawberries and cherries, with a finish on bitter almond tones. On the palate, it reveals a rather light and very fine tannic structure, set in a precise balance between freshness and body. The pairing with speck and a dish of canederli in broth is almost mandatory.
