Bellone 'Anthium' Casale del Giglio 2025
Unusual grapesThe Anthium is a salty and rich white wine that revives the face of one of the oldest grape varieties in Lazio, Bellone. Aged exclusively in steel after fermentation with indigenous yeasts, it shows an aromatic profile rich in notes of exotic fruit and citrus intertwined with sensations of spices and aromatic herbs. On the palate, it is enveloping and full-bodied, enlivened by good freshness and an intense sea breeze.
The Anthium is a wine produced from pure Bellone, an ancient Lazio white grape variety that is proving to be very interesting and that expresses itself at absolute excellence levels in the Agro Pontino area. The proximity to the sea gives the wine a sunny and Mediterranean profile, with ripe and rich fruit, making it pleasantly harmonious and intense. A label that represents a beautiful example of the recovery of an ancient variety, interpreted with the utmost respect for the typical aromas and characteristics of the terroir.
The Bellone "Anthium" is produced at the Casale del Giglio estate, located inland from Anzio south of Rome, in the Agro Pontino area. An area that was once marshy, which was reclaimed in the early decades of the last century and is still virgin regarding viticulture. Thanks to a project that involved several University Institutions and Research Centers and a careful zoning work, the grape varieties most suitable for the local pedoclimatic conditions were chosen. Among these is also Bellone, which was once widespreadin the area of the Castelli Romani, which has found in the sandy soils and the Mediterranean climate, influenced by the breezes of the Tyrrhenian Sea, particularly suitable conditions for its needs. In the Agro Pontino, it reaches perfect ripeness of the grapes with a particularly rich and intense aromatic profile. The harvest takes place towards the end of September. The grapes are macerated on the skins for a short period before proceeding to soft pressing and spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts, which lasts about 10-12 days at a temperature of 18-20 °C. The wine then matures in steel for about six months before being bottled.
“Anthium” Casale del Giglio is a beautiful example of recovery and enhancement of a grape that belongs to the tradition of the region, cultivated in a terroir particularly suited to enhance its best expressive qualities. In the glass, it has a straw yellow color with golden reflections. The aromas express ripe notes of yellow fruit, citrus, soft hints of tropical fruit, memories of aromatic herbs, and marine notesiodine. The sip is rich, broad, and enveloping, juicy and satisfying, with a persistent finish, good freshness, and sapidity.
