DERTHONA BORGOGNO 2022 DESCRIPTION

The Derthona of Borgogno, a famous winery in the Barolo area, is a white wine made from pure Timorasso. This ancient native vine of the Colli Tortonesi was rediscovered and valorised only in the 1980s, after a long period of oblivion. Today, Timorasso represents one of the most interesting white wines in northern Italy, which has managed to impose itself for its intensity, depth of flavour and exceptional longevity. Because of its structure and richness, it is a wine with a gastronomic vocation, which at the table finds excellent pairings with classic dishes of Piedmontese tradition, such as vitello tonnato, raw meat all'albese with truffles, and battered vegetables. It is also excellent with tasty and intensely flavoured seafood dishes, white meats and medium-aged cheeses.

Borgogno's white Derthona comes from the Colli Tortonesi estate of the famous Langhe winery. To complete the range of wines with a great white, Borgogno purchased a 3-hectare property near Monleale. The Scaldapulce vineyard is located in a magnificent hilly area characterised by a continental climate, mitigated by the sea breezes that blow inland. The considerable temperature range allows grapes with particularly intense aromatic profiles to be obtained. The soils are predominantly clayey, of ancient marine origin, with the presence of limestone, silt and blue marl similar to those in the Barolo area. The vineyards are located at an altitude of approximately 250 metres above sea level, with south-west and south-east exposure. Harvesting is done manually towards the end of September and the grapes are subjected to a 3-day cold maceration before being gently pressed. The must ferments spontaneously with indigenous yeasts in cement vats at a controlled temperature of 17 °C. Before release, the wine matures for 10 months in steel and a further 7 months in the bottle.

The Derthona wine from the Piedmontese Borgogno winery possesses a remarkable personality. It is a bottle suitable for those who prefer full-bodied white wines of considerable intensity. To the eye it has a rather dense and luminous yellow colour. The olfactory picture is rich and complex, with aromas of white-fleshed fruit, tobacco peach, pear, hints of white flowers, hints of honey and flint. The entry on the palate is lively and taut, with an enveloping and structured mouthfeel, expressing harmonious, ample and deep aromas, leading to a long finish of vibrant freshness. It is excellent to taste straight away, but also has good ageing potential, with aromatic evolutions that veer towards hydrocarbon notes.
