Greco in Anfora 'Sophia' Cantina Giardino 2022
ArtisanalThe Greco "Sophia" is a genuine and authentic expression of the Irpinia territory, produced according to ancient Campanian traditions. It is vinified with long macerations in 200-liter amphorae for 319 days, thus giving typical and varied aromas and a full-bodied and intense structure, slightly tannic and with great territorial expressiveness
‘Sophia’ Greco in Anfora by Cantina Giardino is a peculiar and complex macerated white wine that, as the name suggests, is vinified in amphora. We are in Ariano Irpinio, in the province of Avellino, a territory that Cantina Giardino aims to enhance while respecting the natural rhythms. In this perspective, it was decided to focus exclusively on indigenous grape varieties, including Greco, processed without any invasive intervention in the winery. The ‘Sophia’ is the only label crafted in amphora with prolonged skin maceration, and depending on the vintage, a different grape variety may be used, as the intention is to focus attention on the wine vessel rather than the variety used.
Cantina Giardino Greco in Anfora ‘Sophia’ is a 100% Greco from vines about 70 years old, located at 450 meters above sea level on sandy and clay soils, cultivated organically. After harvesting, the grapes are manually pressed using a wooden press, and the must obtainedis placed together with the pomace in terracotta amphorae of about 200 liters. In these containers, only indigenous yeasts carry out the alcoholic fermentation, accompanied by over 300 days of skin maceration before racking. The wine is then transferred to large oak barrels where it matures for an additional 6 months. Throughout the entire processing, the mass is not subjected to any clarification or filtration, and no sulfites are added.
The orange wine Greco in Anfora ‘Sophia’ by Cantina Giardino has an intense yellow hue with coppery reflections. Energetic and complex on the nose with citrus and floral notes meeting saline mineral perceptions, at times briny. Taste vibrant, rich, and slightly tannic, endowed with a beautiful sapid vein and a refreshing zest.
