Rosso Petra 2022
"Petra" is a deep and intense Tuscan red wine made from Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot grapes that undergo spontaneous fermentation and are aged for at least 18 months in barriques and the same in bottle. The ruby color with garnet reflections introduces a strongly Mediterranean bouquet, characterized by notes of myrtle, rosemary, wild fruit, and balsamic breezes. The taste is satisfying for its depth and grace, which enhance the well-integrated tannins and make the long persistence enjoyable.
Petra is the flagship wine of the Petra Wines winery, the Tuscan property of the Moretti family, which is present in Franciacorta with the historic brand Bellavista. It is a classic Bordeaux blend, composed of a majority of Cabernet Sauvignon with a percentage of Merlot added. The Suvereto area has proven to be very suitable for the most famous international varieties, which express themselves with ripe fruit and particularly rich aromas. The long aging in barrique allows the wine to smooth the tannins and achieve remarkable aromatic complexity.
The red Petra is produced in the Suvereto area, in the inland of Campiglia Marittima. This is a still wild area of Maremma Toscana, where the vineyards are cultivated in a environment rich in olives and Mediterranean scrub. The soils, often stony, poor, and very draining, are very suitable for quality viticulture. The warm, dry, and breezy climate has proven to be very favorable for red berry varieties, particularly for the grapes.international. It is precisely for these particular characteristics of the territory that Francesca Moretti fell in love with the place and in the 1990s wanted to create her own winery. Today, Petra wines are a consolidated reality in Tuscan wine, among the best expressions of the Val di Cornia area.
The Petra wine is born from a blend of the best grapes from the estate, cultivated in the San Lorenzo Alto locality, on soils predominantly limestone and rich in skeleton. The Cabernet Sauvignon contributes to providing structure and elegant aromas while the Merlot gives softness and pleasantness on the palate. The fermentations take place in truncated cone oak tanks, using only indigenous yeasts. The wine ages for a period of 18 months in barriques of first, second, and third passage, with medium and light toasting, and completes the aging with another 18 months in the bottle. The color is dark ruby with slight garnet reflections. The olfactory profile is elegant and intense, with aromas of black currant, berries, cherry, sour cherry, notes of medicinal herbs, balsamic hints, spicy nuances, and lightly toasted. On the palate, it has a good structure, with complex aromas and evolved tannins. The finish is harmonious and very persistent.
