Rosso by Massa Vecchia is a rustic and authentic Sangiovese from the Tuscan Maremma that is aged for 18 months in oak barrels. The nose releases aromas of cherry and black cherry juice, spicy, earthy, bucolic and undergrowth memories. On the palate it has grit and character, highlighting a slender freshness and a delicate tannin

Massa Vecchia creates its “Rosso” as a ode to country life and the spontaneity of the nature surrounding the estate: pioneers of organic farming and a vision of wine without chemicals, Fabrizio and Patrizia present here a blend of various plots cultivated with Sangiovese.

The “Rosso” from the Massa Vecchia winery comes to life from Sangiovese grapes sourced from the different plots that make up the estate's vineyard. At the foot of the hill where the town of Massa Marittima stands, and on the two opposite slopes that face one towards the sea and the other towards the Apennines, are the first two parcels: respectively 3.9 hectares, surrounded by arable land and olive groves, at an altitude of 230 meters, and 0.8 hectares, at 200 meters above sea level. The influence of the breezes blowing from the Tyrrhenian Sea is crucial here, as the slopes practically slide towards the coast of Follonica, on that small gulf that stretches between Piombino and Punta Ala. The last vineyard block extends for 1.2 hectares in the more internal part, at 500 meters above sea level, amidst cultivated fields and woods. The soil composition is quite varied: galestro, limestone marls, and more clayey matrices. All vineyard work is done by hand and without the use of synthetic products, with the subsequent winemaking phases carried out consistently: spontaneous fermentation by indigenous yeasts takes place in open chestnut vats, and the maceration on the skins lasts for about 3 weeks. After racking, aging occurs in old oak barrels for a period of 18 months. No manipulation precedes bottling, which is followed by a resting period in the cellar of about 6 months.

The “Rosso” of Massa Vecchia presents an intense ruby color with garnet reflections. The impact on the nose is of great spontaneity and intensity, where fruity notes of currants and ripe cherries are distinguished, with a clear background of aromatic herbs and woodland sensations, linked to earthy notes. An idea of rusticity envelops the palate, in a very direct sip of great character, composed of fine tannic texture and supported by a persistent freshness. A Sangiovese for sharing, with first courses of pasta with ragù and platters of local cured meats and aged cheeses.
