Catarratto Barracco 2022
ArtisanalThe Catarratto by Barracco is a fresh and expressive Sicilian white wine, vinified only in steel without macerations or filtrations. Mediterranean scents of fresh fruit, flowers, chamomile and wild herbs animate a slender, savory, refreshing, harmonious and expressive sip. Artisanal wine, made as it once was
The Catarratto from the Francesca Barracco winery is a fresh and Mediterranean white wine, with a expressive personality, generous and surprising. This label, produced in only 4,000 bottles, was born almost by chance: the winemaker Roberto Bruno was unable to produce his orange wine in the 2018 vintage because the skins of the Catarratto did not manage to develop in terms of thickness and aromaticity due to the abundant rains. His choice was therefore to produce a version without skin maceration which, thanks to the appreciation received, has become part of the winery's line.
This Catarratto presents itself as the direct and genuine expression of the territory of Mazara del Vallo, where the small Barracco winery is located, managed by the young and talented winemaker Roberto Bruno. The grapes are grown on the clay and limestone soils of the Minneno and Roccazzo areas, produced from vines that are between 25 and 55 years old and harvested by hand between the end of August and mid-September. The winemaking takes place in steel with spontaneous fermentation, thanks to the action of indigenous yeasts, without macerations, without clarifications or filtrations, without enzymes or oenological additives. Only very low quantities of sulfites are allowed.
The Barracco white Catarratto is a rare and precious testimony of the ancient winemaking traditions of western Sicily. It is indeed produced in very small quantities in accordance with the most authentic farming practices, without resorting to the shortcuts offered by chemistry and modern oenology. In the glass, it shines with a beautiful golden color that may present a slight opacity, due to light natural residues. The aromas evoke fresh fruit like pear and apple, but also chamomile flowers and wild herbs. On the palate, it is savory and refreshing, slender, harmonious, and pleasant, with immediate expressiveness and unmistakably Sicilian character.
