The Elisir di Rabarbaro produced by the Officina Profumo-Farmaceutica di Santa Maria Novella is a liqueur that derives from an ancient savoir-faire. It is the fruit of centuries of experience, rooted in the oldest customs of making herbal and spice infusions as elixirs of long life or medicinal and digestive remedies. Its austere and bitter character is fundamentally centered on the typical varietal aromas of rhubarb, enriched by notes of medicinal herbs, balsamic elements, and delicate spices.
The liqueur Elisir di Rabarbaro is one of the most interesting labels of the Officina Profumo-Farmaceutica di Santa Maria Novella, which represents one of the historic realities of Italian liqueur tradition. It is an elixir still made today according to the most ancient artisanal customs. The origins of the first laboratory date back to 1221, when some Dominican friars arrived in Florence and settled in the Church of Santa Maria tra le Vigne. Thus began the production of infusions, elixirs based on the knowledge botanical and pharmaceutical knowledge of the religious. The recipe for the rhubarb liqueur was created by Father Ludovico Berlingacci, pharmacist of the religious community from 1707 to 1743. He is credited with the intuition to use the root of Chinese rhubarb, famous for its digestive properties, to create an infusion. Even today it is produced only with Chinese rhubarb, alcohol, sugar, and natural aromas.
The Elisir di Rabarbaro from the Officina Profumo-Farmaceutica di Santa Maria Novella owes its success to a simple recipe that has never been modified over the centuries. It brings to the forefront and enhances the best characteristics of rhubarb in its absolute expressive purity. It presents itself visually as a bright amber color, with brilliant ancient gold reflections. The olfactory profile is characterized by an intense aroma of rhubarb, notes of soft spices, hints of medicinal and balsamic herbs. The entry on the palate is soft, warm, and enveloping, with an intense, rich sip and a slightly bitter finish.
