The Mezcal ‘San Luis del Rio’ from the Mexican mezcaleria Del Maguey represents a traditional agave distillate with a soft and rich taste produced in the state of Oaxaca, a territory where great mezcals originate. In particular, this bottle comes from the village of San Luis del Rio, located in a warm valley where the Hormiga Colorada river flows. The Mezcal ‘San Luis del Rio’ is part of the ‘Village Tradiciones’ selection, which encompasses expressions of mezcal produced in small villages in the state of Oaxaca. San Luis del Rio is the land of Paciano Cruz Nolasco, one of the most important and established mezcal producers, who along with his son Marcos collaborates with the Del Maguey brand on this project.
Del Maguey Mezcal ‘San Luis del Rio’ is crafted from Espadin variety agave. Once mature, the plant is cut to extract the sugary heart, the so-called “piña”, which is then cooked and subsequently ground to obtain the juice with a high concentration of sugars contained within it.inside. This undergoes spontaneous alcoholic fermentation for a few days and the fermented product is then subjected to a double distillation process in wood-fired copper stills. The mezcal obtained is finally bottled without any wood aging, in order to preserve the full character of the San Luis del Rio territory.
The Mezcal Del Maguey ‘San Luis del Rio’ has a transparent and crystalline appearance. On the nose, intense notes of citrus and exotic fruits such as pineapple and mango emerge, combined with hints of cocoa and peculiar aromas of dried chili and cigar smoke.
