Riesling Greywacke 2024
The Riesling from the New Zealand winery Greywacke is a white wine with a straw yellow color that is partially fermented with indigenous yeasts, and then left to age on the lees in used oak barrels. Fresh and well-balanced, it fills the glass with aromas of lime flowers, notes of anise, and mineral hints.
The Greywacke Riesling represents a tense and off-dry New Zealand expression, following in the footsteps of the great Rieslings of the Moselle. In fact, with about 20 g/l of residual sugar, this label is inspired by the German Rieslings halbtrocken, or feinherb, while maintaining its own distinct identity. Kevin Judd, the owner-producer of the Greywacke winery, was already producing great Rieslings when he worked at Cloudy Bay, one of the most famous wineries in Marlborough where Kevin was a founding winemaker.
Greywacke Riesling is made from the eponymous white grape variety worked in purity. The vineyards, managed under certified organic farming, rest on clay and gravel soils in the Fairhall area of Marlborough, and are about 25 years old. The grapes are hand-harvested slightly early to enhance the tension and freshness of the fruit, and then gently pressed whole. The resulting must is left to cold settle and then half of the mass is placed in steel tanks for alcoholic fermentation, while the remaining half is transferred to old oak barrels.French where it spontaneously undergoes the fermentation process. Just before the final conclusion of the transformation, the two masses are assembled in steel and the fermentation is stopped, in order to preserve a small amount of natural sugars. At this point, the wine is directed into old barrels where it rests for 5 months on the fine lees.
The Marlborough Riesling from the Greywacke winery is straw yellow in color. Fresh nose with hints of lime, white peach, and anise, combined with mineral notes. The taste is well balanced between the zesty freshness and the delicate sweetness, with a long-lasting citrus and mineral finish.
