Soave Wine

Soave Wine

Soave wine is one of Italy's most loved and popular white wines. It is produced from the Veneto white grape of choice, the Garganega, in a hilly area of ancient volcanic origin to the west of the city of Verona, in what is now Europe's largest vineyard. The oldest area of the denomination, which includes the municipality of the same name and that of Monteforte d'Alpone, is defined as Classica and there is also the Superiore mention for the most intense and complex expressions, occasionally aged in wooden barrels. In general, this type is characterised by a delicate organoleptic profile, which is fresh and mineral, with harmonious features and a pleasant almond finish.

A Wine Inseparably Linked to its Land

From its very name, Soave wine indicates the precise area of origin. Its name originates from the word ''Suaves'', which was the nickname given to the Swabians when they arrived in Italy with the troops of the Longobard king Alboino. Since Roman times, various cultivations were already flourishing, and it is no coincidence that the area was considered a ''pagus'', or confined rural district, reflecting its suitability for agricultural activities.

The importance of wine-growing increased from the Middle Ages onwards, when the fascinating castle in the same town was built. In addition to this castle, within the same municipality it is also possible to see, at the Palace of Justice, a tombstone dating back to 1300 that is evidence of the important local tradition in the production of Veneto wines, confirming the natural productive potential of the area.

Over time, winemaking techniques have made it possible to change the approach to this type, and it is no coincidence that Soave DOC, which for a long time was based on quantity, has become increasingly linked to high quality. Innovative styles have allowed the creation of less simple and straightforward wines, even resorting to the use of wooden barrels and further ageing periods to achieve more complex results in the superior versions. The wines mainly express fruity and floral sensations, in various tones, and a predominantly fresh note on the palate.

The Different Varieties and Characteristics of Soave Wine

Soave Classico wine originates from the historic production area, which covers the municipalities of the same name and Monteforte d'Alpone. The wine is aged for at least three months in steel or cement containers, demonstrating the winemaker's intention to produce a white wine with fresh notes that will gradually express itself over time while maintaining its primary characteristics.

The main ingredient of this white wine is the Garganega grape, which by law is at least 70%, possibly combined with other white grapes up to a maximum of 30%, with Trebbiano being of particular interest. However, the Garganega grape is the real heart of this typology. It is the vine that producers concentrate on the most, as it has shown great potential in terms of quality and elegance.

Soave white wine also has a Superiore DOCG version. The elevation of the hills allows the best expressions of this wine to be discovered, maintaining the characteristic brilliance of a young white wine while expressing more intensity and depth in the organoleptic analysis.

The wine in the glass is generally coloured by notes that are not too full and transparent. Depending on the ageing process, it ranges from greenish shades to more precious golden tones. In addition to these organoleptic characteristics, the great ageing potential of this white wine should be emphasised, given its excellent structure.

On the palate, there is a pleasant smoothness and roundness, which is never excessive and gives great balance to the sip. It is ideally paired with dishes in which aromas and flavours are enhanced, such as those based on fish and shellfish that are not too complex for the younger versions. For the more evolved and sophisticated versions, dishes based on legumes and tasty white meats are also perfect, as well as medium-aged cheeses.
