'Xerinola' Artesano Vintners 2022
"Xerinola" is a white wine from Catalonia produced from Xarel-lo and Macabeu grapes. The nose recalls aromas of yellow pulp fruit, candied fruit, citrus peel and a trail of aromatic herbs. The sip flows easy and light, outlining a limpid freshness and a savory matrix
“Xerinola” is clearly the favorite drink of Artesano Vintners, the group of Spanish and New Zealand artisans who create this light and deeply refreshing orange wine. The label is quite explanatory of the winemaking idea behind the project: literally translatable as a banquet of friends who have known each other for a long time and family, it reminds us that wine is sharing and joy.
Artesano Vintners produces “Xerinola” through the vinification of white grapes typically from Catalonia, such as Xarel-lo and Parellada, along with Chenin Blanc, grown under organic farming practices and coming from the two nearby territories that rise in the inland of Tarragona. Conca de Barberà is the northernmost area, extending on slopes facing the Mediterranean at an altitude nearing 600 meters above sea level, while Priorat, which represents a renowned name within Iberian denominations, is located on more rugged hills, at an altitude around 400 meters. The soils are characterized by a rocky matrix and sandy clay and limestone origins. The hand-harvested grapes are transported to the small space available inside the Bodega La Boella, in the immediate vicinity of Tarragona, where they are vinified in steel. The spontaneous alcoholic fermentation takes place simultaneously with a brief maceration on the skins and the subsequent aging on the fine lees extends for a period of several months. Bottling is done without filtration or other cleaning operations.
“Xerinola” by Artesano Vintners offers to the eye its intensely yellow color, of a golden hue and slightly hazy appearance. The nose is the quintessence of Mediterranean character, with an attack of pickled lemons, hints of scrub and medicinal herbs, and a pronounced spicy note of ginger, with a softer final nuance of ripe fruit pulp. The sip is consistent and entirely played on zesty freshness, as well as on pronounced minerality, very drinkable and juicy. A delicate orange wine for aperitifs among friends and for fish dishes, whether roasted or raw, and vegetable soufflés.
