The Galician winery La Senda presents ‘1.9.8.4.’, a dynamic and juicy red wine, ideal when you are looking for an accessible yet intriguing drink. In 2012, Diego Losada founded his small production reality on the outskirts of Ponferrada, technically included in the autonomous community of Castilla y Leon but located on the eastern border of the wine region of Galicia. Here, the high altitudes, the abundant presence of minerals in the soils, and the cool oceanic climate are the elements at the basis of the great finesse of the wines, whether they are white or red. The Spanish term “senda”, from which the winery takes its name, means “path”, “trail”.
La Senda ‘1.9.8.4.’ is a 100% Mencia, an indigenous black grape variety from the northwest of Spain that in the past, due to its characteristics, was thought to be related to Cabernet Franc. The vines from which the grapes are sourced consist of 70-90 year old plants rooted in clay-limestone soils rich in minerals, located at about 650 meters of altitude. In the winery, the alcoholic fermentation, carried out by only indigenous yeasts, takes place in old open oak barrels, with a short maceration on the skins of 3-4 days. The subsequent maturation phase lasts 7 months and takes place in French oak barrels, partly small and partly large. The liquid is finally bottled without undergoing any filtration and without the addition of sulfur.
