LAGREIN ABBAZIA DI NOVACELLA 2023 DESCRIPTION

The Lagrein produced by Abbazia di Novacella is an intense, full-bodied red made from the native Alto Adige grape variety of the same name, which is enjoying a period of considerable success among wine lovers thanks to its assertive personality. It is a label that is part of the winery's classic line, designed to highlight the varietal aromas of the grapes and bring out the authentic face of the vines. Lagrein presents itself with its typical red fruit notes, pleasantly rough tannins and good freshness. It is a red suitable for those who especially like structure, power and aromatic richness. Its typical gastronomic vocation is enhanced with game dishes: unsurpassed with venison or roe deer.

Lagrein Novacella is a label that represents this historic South Tyrolean winery's effort to expand the traditional range of whites from the Eisack Valley with some classic reds from the region. Lagrein vines, in fact, are grown on the estate located near Bolzano. The area is ideal for Lagrein, which needs a warm climate with nice sunny exposures. The vineyards are located at an elevation of 250 meters above sea level and are cultivated on soil characterized by rather deep, silt-sandy soils of alluvial origin. At the end of the harvest, the grapes are sent to fermentation in stainless steel tanks, with maceration on the skins lasting a couple of weeks. The wine is then racked into 60-hectoliter oak barrels, where it matures for at least six months before being bottled.

The Lagrein wine of the Abbey of Novacella represents the fragrant version of the grape variety, which is especially appreciated for its straightforward, direct immediate face. It is a red that immediately reveals its typically fruity, expressive and generous character. To the eye, it is dark red in color with light, youthful purple highlights. The olfactory profile reveals aromas of cherry, blackberry, red-fleshed plum, hints of underbrush, hints of vanilla and oriental spices. The palate has a good structure, with dense tannins well integrated with the body of the wine. The juicy, soft and exuberant fruit accompanies the sip towards a fresh and persistent finish. A bottle of sure value at a very convnient price.
