Blauschiefer Meyer-Nakel 2019
Meyer-Nakel's Blauschiefer is a red wine made in Germany from Pinot Noir grown on soils rich in slate and decomposed stones, which lend minerality and slight smoky overtones to the wine. It is full and enveloping on the palate, with a juicy, harmonious mouthfeel supported by soft, velvety tannins, while notes of red fruit, blueberries, blackberries and cherries under spirits stand out on the nose, accompanied by hints of spice due to aging in wood. A wine to pair with red meat dishes or a board of medium-aged cheeses
The Blauschiefer, made by the Meyer-Näkel estate, is a classic version of pure Pinot Noir, which well represents the characteristics of the German region of Ahr. The famous Burgundy grape, very demanding and difficult to cultivate outside its native territory, has found in this region ideal conditions to produce great wines, elegant, refined, and fragrant. The cool climate and the suitable soils give a red characterized by typical aromas of small red berries and delicate floral scents. It is a label that seduces with immediate pleasantness, but it can also be kept for a few years in the cellar without fear.
The Blauschiefer Meyer-Näkel wine comes from the estate's vineyards, mainly cultivated in the areas of Dernau, Neuenahr, Ahrweiler, and Walporzheim. The area is characterized by sunny exposures facing south and a cool microclimate, which favors slow and gradual ripening. The soils are very rich in slate rocks that warm up in the sun and help mitigate the cold night temperatures. The vines of Pinot Noir are conducted with low yields and the grapes are hand-picked with selection directly in the vineyard. Fermentation occurs spontaneously with the use of only indigenous yeasts, with a maceration on the skins of about 18 days. Before proceeding to bottling, the wine matures for 12 months in second, third, and fourth passage barriques, in order to avoid excessive transfer of woody aromas.
The red Blauschiefer from the German winery Meyer-Näkel is the pure expression of the stony soils in which the vines are cultivated. The classic varietal notes of the Burgundy grape are finely enriched by subtle mineral hints, typical of slate-rich soils. Of a beautiful bright and luminous ruby color, it expresses delicately floral scents, aromas of raspberry, red currant, wild strawberries, sour cherry, spicy hints, and mineral notes of graphite. Medium-bodied, harmonious, and fragrant, it presents finely nuanced aromas and velvety tannins. The finish is long, pleasantly savory, and vibrantly fresh.
