Chianti Classico Gran Selezione 'Grosso Sanese' Podere il Palazzino 2018
The Chianti Classico Gran Selezione "Grosso Sanese" of Podere il Palazzino is an intense red, aged, son of the area of Gaiole in Chianti. The glass is very complex with aromas of cherry jam, dried citrus and then notes of evolution with cocoa, vanilla and hints of toasting. It's intense and robust to the palate, with a great aromatic persistence and a surprisingly fresh finish, which entices a new sip. An important wine to match with important meats, such as a 'costata' or game
“Grosso Sanese” Gran Selezione stands as the flagship creation of Podere Il Palazzino within the Chianti Classico denomination, a label dedicated to the history of the territory. The Grosso represented the most widely circulated silver coin in Europe and the Levant starting from the last part of the 12th century: the first existing documentation regarding the coin of the Republic of Siena dates back to 1182. The iconography of the Sienese coins has been perpetuated over the centuries, depicting an S on the obverse and a cross on the reverse.
Podere Il Palazzino produces its Chianti Classico Gran Selezione “Grosso Sanese” from Sangiovese grown in a 2-hectare plot adjacent to the winery, a farmhouse renovated during the 18th century with the agrarian reform of Pietro Leopoldo I. The soil has a calcareous matrix and is essentially composed of alberese and galestro, the more or less ancient stones originated from the compaction of clay in geological eras that crumble in the hands during the dry season. The altitude here is close to 400 meters above sea level.of the sea and the exposure is south-southeast. The harvest is done manually, with a yield of about 60 quintals per hectare and the winemaking is carried out in wood: fermentation by indigenous yeasts takes place in truncated-conical oak tanks of 50 hectoliters and continues with skin maceration for 30 days, while malolactic fermentation occurs spontaneously after transfer to barriques. The aging takes place in Allier oak barriques, one third new, and lasts for a period of 18 months: at the end, the barrels are blended and bottled, with a final resting period in the cellar of an additional 6 months.
The Chianti Classico Gran Selezione “Grosso Sanese” from Podere Il Palazzino presents itself to the eye with an intense ruby red color with garnet reflections. The impact on the nose is immediately characterized by a deep fruitiness of cherry jam and the citrus notes of dried orange peel, while in the background emerge evolved hints of cocoa and tobacco, with a finish on notes of tobacco and hints of vanilla. The tasting honorsits name: warm and velvety, with a very fine tannic structure, it is accompanied by a pronounced minerality and the finish reveals a surprising freshness.
