Fedespina 2020
Artisanal
Callmewine's FavouritesFedespina - the flagship wine of the namesake winery - is an elegant and passionate expression of Pinot Noir from the Tuscan Apennines. It comes in fact from the cool climate of Lunigiana, and ages for 15 months in French oak barrels: on the nose it explodes with finesse in notes of cassis, berries, tropical hints, notes of leather, licorice and balsamic herbs, framed by mineral sensations ,while at the mouthfeel it is long and enveloping, full of the proverbial grace proper to this grape variety
Fedespina is the flagship wine of the eponymous winery, as well as one of the most complex and profound expressions of Italian Pinot Nero. Podere Fedespina is a splendid reality in Lunigiana, the true natural watershed between Liguria and Toscana, still too little known for the quality of its wines. Certainly, the presence of 'bulky' neighbors has significantly contributed to this neglect, but to the eyes and especially to the palates of the most attentive, the expressive peaks that local liquids can reach have not gone unnoticed, when produced with sensitivity and knowledge. The great protagonist here is Ciliegiolo, accompanied by international grape varieties like Merlot and Pinot Nero that have been rooted in the territory for a long time and are capable of giving life to peculiar wines of great finesse.
The red Fedespina is produced from pure Pinot Nero grapes, coming from vines over 40 years old that rest on alluvial soils. In the vineyard, the approach is careful and as non-interventionist as possible, with an eye always vigilant of biodiversity. In the cellar, the process continues consistently with spontaneous alcoholic fermentations in concrete tanks and maceration on the skins for about 20 days regarding this Pinot Nero. The liquid ages for 15 months in 300-liter French oak barrels.
The Fedespina wine enchants with its luminous and transparent ruby hue, typical of its grape variety. Generous from the first sniff, the liquid offers a truly wide range of sensations, including cassis, leather, blackberry, and refreshing balsamic herbs. Outstanding tasting, where the liquid, while not being a heavyweight in every respect, extends sinuously conquering every area of the palate thanks to a perfect cohesion between pulp, acidity, and saline texture. A bottle that obviously calls for food, even in virtuous pairings with noble game and aged cheeses.
