Gin 'Japanese Yuzu' Ukiyo
The "Japanese Yuzu"s a crisp, citrucy but relatively smooth Gin from the distillery Ukiyo Spirits. Born from a base of locally grown barley that is distilled into a traditional shōchū spirit. It is then redistilled with juniper, yuzu, regional citrus and botanicals, respecting the 1500 year old tradition of cultivating and harvesting yuzu in Japan. With background hint of Pine, Lavender, Matcha Tea
The ‘Japanese Yuzu’ Gin from Ukiyo Spirits is a spirit with an irresistibly fresh, citrusy flavour, produced in Kagoshima, at the southern tip of Japan’s main island, in the shadow of the active volcano Sakurajima. The key ingredient in this gin is yuzu, a citrus fruit native to Japan that resembles a lemon but is characterised by its distinct aroma and milder acidity. This gin pays homage to Japan’s ancient tradition of yuzu cultivation, dating back at least 1,500 years. The word “ukiyo”, the distillery’s name, means “floating world” and refers to an attitude towards life free from worries and difficulties, focused solely on enjoying the moment, just as Ukiyo’s spirits help you to do.
Ukiyo Spirits Gin ‘Japanese Yuzu’ is made from local barley, which is processed and distilled in traditional Japanese pot stills to produce traditional shōchū, an alcoholic beverage with an alcohol content somewhere between that of wine and spirits. The shōchū base is then distilled again with other ingredients, including regional botanicals, citrus fruits and juniper. The distillate is subsequently infused with yuzu and bottled after a maceration period of varying duration.
Ukiyo Spirits’ ‘Japanese Yuzu’ Gin has a clear, crystalline appearance. The bouquet ranges from notes of juniper to citrusy aromas of yuzu, with hints of bitter orange and coriander. On the palate, it displays an excellent balance between enveloping smoothness and citrus freshness, with a long finish that echoes the aromas detected on the nose. This gin is the ideal choice for adding a distinctive exotic touch to classic cocktails such as the Gin and Tonic.
