The Rosso from the Tuscan reality of Massa Vecchia is an artisanal label endowed with a genuine ancestral dimension, the result of the sincere approach of this winery based in Massa Marittima, precisely in the locality of Massa Vecchia, from which the estate takes its name. A particular feature of this wine lies in the use of chestnut vats during processing, containers in which fermentation occurs with skin maceration. This is a wood that is part of the Mediterranean tradition, particularly Italian, which has slightly fallen out of use following the spread of French oak. Compared to the latter, chestnut wood has a greater porosity, a factor that translates into a more significant micro-oxygenation of the wine. Furthermore, chestnut barrels contribute a strong tannic component, which is why their use must always be carefully considered.
Massa Vecchia Rosso is born from a single important black grape variety cultivated in sincere respect for the environment, without the use of synthetic chemical products. The harvest is carried out strictly by hand, and the bunches are then pressed in chestnut truncated-conical vats, containers in which spontaneous alcoholic fermentation occurs with skin maceration. Throughout the entire processing, the use of additives and enological aids is excluded.
To the eye, the Rosso di Massa Vecchia displays an intense ruby red color with garnet hues. The nose offers pleasant fruity hints of cherry and currant that blend with evocative perceptions of aromatic herbs, underbrush, and turned earth. The progression on the palate reveals a rustic and authentic character, with great impact, and a direct finish supported by excellent freshness and a very fine tannic structure. In conclusion, the notes of red fruits and underbrush previously perceived on the nose return.
