Koshu 'Private Reserve' Grace Winery 2022
The Koshu "Private Reserve" by Grace Winery is a very aromatic and quite intense white. It is one of the most important wines produced in Japan, vinified from Koshu, an autochthonous variety with a characteristic rose skin. The fermentation takes place in empty wooden tanks, but the aging takes place in steel. A wine of medium body but surprising for intensity both in the nose and in the mouth: apple, pear, peach then spices like white pepper, really complex. The mouthfeel has pleasing creamy sensations and a very persistent finish. An interesting surprise
Grace Winery Koshu ‘Private Reserve’ is a sought-after white wine from Japan made from grapes sourced from the Toriibira vineyard, located in Yamanashi Prefecture. The Koshu is by far the most famous indigenous grape variety of the country, a variety with a peculiar light pink color that gives rise to very pleasant light, smooth, and delicate wines. Grace Wine represents one of the oldest wineries in Japan, having been founded in 1923 by Chotaro Misawa. At the helm of the estate today is the fourth generation of the Misawa family, who lovingly and almost obsessively manage 4 hectares of vineyards.
The Koshu ‘Private Reserve Toriibira Vineyard’ from Grace Winery is a 100% Koshu whose grapes are grown at 450 meters above sea level, on clay and gravel soils with excellent draining properties, allowing for the perfect ripeness of the grapes. Following the manual harvest and meticulous selection, the bunches are gently pressed and the resulting must is fermented in old French oak barrels. The subsequent aging period takes place in stainless steel tanks for a few months.
Visually, the Grace Wine ‘Private Reserve Toriibira Vineyard’ Koshu displays a light straw yellow color. On the nose, delicate aromas of yellow apple, pear, and peach alternate, supported by notes of clove and white pepper that anticipate slightly toasted final perceptions. Dry and fairly broad taste, equipped with pleasant freshness and creamy sensations marked by a persistent aromatic finish. This bottle pairs excellently with traditional Japanese dishes such as shrimp and vegetable tempura.
