This Antico Elixir is indeed produced in accordance with the ancient family recipe, developed back in 1884 by Dr. Giuseppe Clementi, an expert botanist and founder of the historic pharmacy, still located today in Fivizzano, a town nestled among the mountains and woods of Lunigiana.
The recipe for Clementi's Antico Elixir involves the use of two precious and rare varieties of tropical China (Cinchona Calisaya and Chincona Succirubra), various types of medicinal plants, bitter oranges from the Mediterranean, sugar, and alcohol. This ancient recipe was born from the passion and expertise of Dr. Clementi, with the intent to create a beneficial liqueur: the Cinchona Calisaya from Peru was indeed used at the beginning of the 1900s for the extraction of quinine, useful in the prevention of malaria, while the CInchona Succirubra, a rare bark native to Peru, Bolivia, andVenezuela, was sought after for its natural aromatic and dyeing properties.
