The Mencia “Azos Val de Rodrigo” by Daterra is produced in the region of Galicia in Spain, particularly in the municipality of Manzaneda. In 2014, the passion and desire to take on a challenge of Laura Lorenzo and her partner chef Álvaro Domínguez led to the birth of Daterra, which expands its production also thanks to the synergistic work of several winemakers who passionately dedicate themselves to the cultivation of old vines dating back to the twentieth century. A system is adopted that promotes the coexistence and enhancement of agricultural, social, political, and economic principles defined as Permaculture, in order to protect the ecosystem of nature.
The pure Mencia grapes come from vineyards that extend over about 4.5 hectares of land. The latter is truly challenging for cultivation, so much so that the cultivation is considered heroic: the vines are grafted on terraces or slopes that can only be reached on foot, just as the grape harvest can only be manual. In this area, the climate is influenced by oceanic currents that bring mild temperatures both in summer and winter, avoiding sudden frosts that would ruin the harvest.In the cellar, the bunches are destemmed, a brief maceration on the skins occurs, and fermentation with indigenous yeasts takes place. It ages for 11 months in French oak barrels.
The Mencia “Azos Val de Rodrigo” by Daterra is an intense cherry red; the nose is flooded with floral aromas of violet and wild berries with pleasant fruity notes on the finish. On the palate, it has an elegant and balanced structure with delicate tannins that integrate well, and a freshness on the finish that invites drinking. It pairs perfectly with cured meats, grilled red meat, vegetarian first courses; interesting also with aged cheeses.
