'Vadduna Longa' Giuseppe Calabrese 2022
ArtisanalThe "Vadduna Longa" is a white wine with an authentic and genuine profile that comes from a 6-month maceration on the skins. It presents a profile of pleasant Mediterranean sapidity with a particular citrine nuance, rich in aromas of citrus fruits, Mediterranean scrub, figs and orange peel, with a pleasant smoothness and a pleasant tannic sensation
The ‘Vadduna Longa’ from the small artisan winery Giuseppe Calabrese is an orange wine that stands out for its vibrant fresh-salty verve, produced in Calabria at the foot of Monte Pollino, a massive Apennine mountain range located on the border between Basilicata and Calabria. It is a bottle made with only Guarnaccia grapes, a sought-after native white grape variety likely imported by the Greeks in antiquity. Other hypotheses point to a Spanish origin. Today, the chosen place for Guarnaccia Bianca is precisely represented by the Pollino area, although the grape variety is also well distributed on the island of Ischia and in the province of Naples. Embracing a genuinely sustainable and authentic production vision, the estate of Giuseppe Calabrese cultivates this and other traditional varieties with the aim of highlighting the local wine heritage.
Giuseppe Calabrese ‘Vadduna Longa’ is a pure expression of Guarnaccia, a variety grown under certified organic farming in the Pastini vineyard. Here, the exposure is full north, the altitude is 650 meters above sea level while the soil is of medium texture, characterized by an abundant presence of iron and magnesium. The harvest is carried out by hand in boxes in the first decade of October, and the grapes are then destemmed and gently pressed. The must obtained ferments spontaneously in contact with the skins thanks to the action of only indigenous yeasts in stainless steel tanks, the same containers where the 6 months maturation takes place before bottling and the further 4 months resting in glass before the final market release.
The Guarnaccia ‘Vadduna Longa’ by Giuseppe Calabrese has a bright golden color and slightly opaque with amber hues. The olfactory mosaic is composed of pleasant aromas of candied citrus, acacia honey, Mediterranean scrub, and hay, enriched by evocative sea suggestions. Fresh and direct taste, characterized by a marked salty imprint, a pleasant tannic sensation, and a tantalizing citrusy finish.
