Syrah 'Gargantua California' Bergstrom 2015
Rare winesBergstrom's Syrah ”Gargantua California” is an experiment by this Oregon winery. Syrah has been prominent in American winemaking for a few decades now and gives surprising results throughout the West Coast. That's why Bergstrom offers several versions of Syrah from various states. The California version presents a fragrant bouquet, with violets, lavender meeting red fruits and herbs, with briny hints intertwining with the typical spicy aromas of Syrah. Fine, balanced and textured, it impresses with elegance and savoriness. The smoky and balsamic hints on the finish are especially intriguing.
The Syrah "Gargantua California" by Bergström is the result of the desire to produce a great Syrah in the Oregon region, famous mainly for being a second homeland of the Burgundy grape varieties Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. The variety, originally from the Rhône Valley, has adapted well to the pedoclimatic characteristics of the territory; proof of this is a red of great charm, intense, rich, and deep. The aromas of small dark berry fruits and the spicy notes make it very suitable for gastronomic pairings with game on the spit, beef roasts, and mixed grills.
"Gargantua California" is a Syrah produced in Oregon by the Bergström estate. The project was born from an initiative by John and Karen Bergstrom, who together decided to dedicate themselves to grape growing and wine production. The vineyards are located in the famous Willamette Valley, which, due to its cool climatic conditions and suitable soils, is considered one of the best regions in the entire United States. Of the 34 hectares of the property, only about a dozenare dedicated to viticulture. The agronomic management follows the principles of biodynamics, fully respecting the environment. The wine is the fruit of Syrah vineyards about 30 years old, cultivated in hilly areas, on soils of ancient volcanic origin, which have generated schists of metamorphic nature. The best selected bunches in the vineyard are vinified with a fermentation partly whole cluster and skin maceration. Before proceeding to bottling, the wine ages for 12 months in barrique and for 12 months in bottle.
The red Syrah "Gargantua California" by Bergström is an interesting interpretation of this extraordinary French grape variety, capable of giving reds of remarkable and unmistakable personality. Of a deep ruby red with purple reflections, it expresses an intense and rich bouquet, with aromas of black currant, blueberries, wild blackberry, ripe cherry, floral hints of violet, notes of medicinal herbs, oriental spices, and black pepper. Structured and fruity, it has a dense and incisive tannic texture, well integrated into the body of the wine. Harmonious and
