Thanks to its vinification with carbonic maceration for 7 days, it results with a slight bubble that gives it an extra touch of freshness. Once opened, it releases dark aromas of wood and leather that in a short time turn into fruity hints of blueberry and cherry with a salty note of licorice. ‘Hurdy Gurdy’ by Vinyes Tortuga is a completely Spanish interpretation of the Bordeaux varieties Cabernet Franc and Merlot, offered in an unprecedented artisanal version made through carbonic maceration, appreciated for its fruity and genuine character. The Vinyes Tortuga winery cultivates just under 10 hectares of vineyards in the Alt Empordà, a wine-growing area located in the northeast of Catalonia that stands out for its unique environmental characteristics, determined by the simultaneous proximity of the Pyrenees mountain range to the north and the Mediterranean Sea to the south. Furthermore, the constant presence of the cold Tramontana refreshes and dries the climate, allowing for perfect ripening of the grapes and preventing the spread of pathogens. “Hurdy-gurdy” is an English word that refers to the hurdy-gurdy, a medieval stringed musical instrument.
Vinyes Tortuga ‘Hurdy Gurdy’ is made from an 80-20 blend of Cabernet Franc and Merlot, grown on schist and slate soils according to the principles of organic farming, complemented by biodynamic practices. The fermentation occurs spontaneously, with 7 days of carbonic maceration exclusively for the Cabernet Franc. Aging takes place with half of the mass in steel tanks for 6 months and the other half in used wooden barrels for 4 months.
To the eye, ‘Hurdy Gurdy’ Vinyes Tortuga presents a deep ruby red color. The nose offers fruity hints of blueberry and cherry, punctuated by intense sensations of salty licorice, leather, and forest. On the palate the body is light and the taste gentle, with a fine tannic texture. A genuine bottle ideal for drinking young, when the crunchy fruity sensations and the dynamism make the sip effortless.
