The "Calcaia" by Barberani is a Muffato wine obtained from grapes affected by Botrytis Cinerea. Elegant and intense, the bouquet is perceivable to the nose, with hints of acacia honey, dried fruit, raisins, and saffron. On the palate, it is seductive, harmonious, soft, and has a beautiful persistence.

The Muffato ‘Calcaia’ is a precious and complex dessert wine made by the Umbrian winery Barberani on the shores of Lake Corbara, a territory characterized by a unique microclimate ideal for the development of noble rot. Behind this incredible transformation process lies the action of a fungus called Botrytis cinerea, which under particular atmospheric conditions, marked by morning fogs and breezy, sunny afternoons, manages to dehydrate the grape, concentrating the sugars and producing peculiar aromas. The launch of ‘Calcaia’ dates back to 1986, although Luigi Barberani began experimenting with wines produced through noble rot as early as the late '70s.

Barberani Muffato ‘Calcaia’ is born from a blend of Grechetto and Procanico, varieties cultivated in the Lake Corbara area on sedimentary and volcanic soils, characterized by an abundant presence of marine fossils, pebbles, and limestone aggregates. The vines, situated between 200 and 300 meters in altitude, have an average age of 30 years and are cultivated under a certified organic regime, integrated with biodynamic practices. The harvest is carried out by hand in five or six passes, selecting the bunches affected by noble rot each time. After pressing the grapes, the must is left to ferment with indigenous yeasts in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, the same type of winemaking containers where the subsequent maturation phase takes place over several months.

The ‘Calcaia’ Muffato Orvieto Classico Superiore by Barberani is a shining golden yellow color. Elegant and enveloping, the aromatic bouquet is defined by peculiar aromas of ripe fruit, candied fruits, white flowers, acacia honey, and saffron. The taste is seductive, soft, and harmonious, with a pleasant fresh-salty component that leads to a sweet and persistent finish.
