AGLIANICO DEL VULTURE BASILISCO 2017 DESCRIPTION

Aglianico del Vulture Basilisco is a red wine of great structure, elegance and complexity. A label that confirms the vocation of the territory of the ancient extinct volcano of Vulture to produce wines of great value and longevity. Agliano, in this small corner of Basilicata, expresses itself at high levels of quality, thanks to the cool climate and volcanic soils, rich in minerals. The name "Basilisk" affirms the historical connection with the area; in Greek, it means "Little King" and was the title of the governor of Basilicata during Byzantium rule.

The Basilisco winery cultivates 25 hectares on the slopes of the ancient Vulture volcano. The Basilisco label comes from a particularly vocated plot of only 4 hectares in Barile, with southeastern exposure at an altitude of about 500 meters above sea level. The vines are trained mainly by guyot on soils of tufaceous-clay composition. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel with maceration on the skins for a period of 15 to 30 days. After racking, the Aglianico rests for 12-15 months in first- and second-passage French oak barriques and completes ageing with 12 months in a bottle in Barile's historic caves, dug into the tuffaceous rock.

Aglianico del Vulture Basilisco is one of the great reds of southern Italy, capable of combining power with austere expressive elegance. It shows a very intense ruby red colour with violet hues. The olfactory picture is characterized by scents of small red berries, underbrush, spicy, balsamic and fine wood notes. On the palate, it immediately denotes an important body with deep aromatic richness, which makes the sip of great persistence and length. The tannic texture is dense and well integrated with the structure of the wine, and the closure is of beautiful freshness with a savoury and mineral finish.
