BOLGHERI ROSSO SUPERIORE MAGNUM GRATTAMACCO 2020 DESCRIPTION

The Bolgheri Superiore Magnum from the Grattamacco winery is an elegant, full-bodied and intense red wine produced on the hilltop overlooking the sea between Castagneto Carducci and Bolgheri, beautiful villages on the Tuscan coast in the province of Livorno. This label is made from a blend of grapes in which Cabernet Sauvignon, which is predominantly present, joins Merlot and Sangiovese to achieve an excellent result that shows great consistency in quality from year to year. The vines are trained, with guyot and spurred cordon pruning, on hillsides located at about 100 meters above sea level characterized by soils rich in sandstone, clay and calcareous-marly rocks, in a microclimate that is constantly affected by the influence of sea breezes that mitigate temperatures. The winery owned by Claudio Tipa, formerly at the helm of Colle Massari, follows the dictates of organic farming and is now one of the strong points in Tuscany for this appellation.

Bolgheri Grattamacco Superiore is made from carefully selected grapes harvested by hand at the time of their perfect ripeness. The clusters are brought to the winery for destemming and then alcoholic fermentation, which takes place spontaneously and using only indigenous yeasts, in 700-litre open vats with no temperature control, with 2-3 manual punching-downs per day and maceration on the skins of about 3 weeks. This is followed by racking with pressing, after which the wine is aged for at least 18 months in first- and second-passage barriques before blending and an additional 12 months of bottle ageing.

Grattamacco's Magnum Bolgheri Superiore shows a brilliant ruby red color to the eye. On the nose appear elegant aromas of ripe fruit and berries, including black cherry, blackberry and cassis, floral notes of violets, dried flowers and herbs, and spicy hints of liquorice, cinnamon, vanilla and cocoa to veer into balsamic and Mediterranean hints. In the mouth, it is austere, warm, powerful and rich, marked by great freshness, an enveloping tannic texture and a long, persistent finish in which fruity recalls are linked to savoury and mineral notes. This Bolgheri from the Grattamacco winery is a red of great stature, balanced, and endowed with more than appreciable aromatic complexity.
