Shiraz Cabernet 'Koonunga Hill 76' Penfolds 2023
"Koonunga Hill" is an intense red wine from South Australia, produced from Shiraz and Cabernet. The aromatic profile offers notes of pink fruit that blend with toasted and spicy aromas due to aging in wood. It is a balanced, complex wine with great structure.
The Shiraz Cabernet “Koonunga Hill 76” by Penfolds is a label that was born in 2006, with the intention of honoring a wine from the winery, the “Claret”, which had achieved great success in 1976. Thirty years later, it was decided to bring back to life a refined wine that today stands out with an interesting dimension both on the nose and on the palate, creating a complexity of aromas and flavors that promises to increase its reach over the years. Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon come together in a well-crafted bottle.
The “Koonunga Hill 76” Penfolds is a Shiraz Cabernet that, as one can easily guess, is assembled precisely from these two grape varieties, cultivated in different plots of land located in the Barossa Valley. The grapes are carefully selected during the harvest and are immediately transferred to the facilities dedicated to winemaking, where they are destemmed. The must ferments in stainless steel containers, and for the final part of aging, the wine is transferred into oak barrelsboth French and American for 10 months, after which it is ready to be bottled.
The Shiraz Cabernet “Koonunga Hill 76” signed by the renowned Australian winery Penfolds presents itself in the glass with an intense ruby red color, endowed with good concentration. The small forest fruits peek through on the nose, enriched with spicy hints and more chocolaty touches. On the palate, it is medium-bodied, with a tasty sip that envelops the palate with roundness, thanks to a finely polished tannic structure, which embraces the drink with delicacy. It finishes with a good persistence. A red wine from southern Australia, perfect to try when you want a label that testifies to the progress made in recent decades by viticulture in the New World.
