Rotburger 'Querschnitt' Kolfok 2020
ArtisanalRotburger "Querschnitt" by Kolfok is an Austrian red wine from Burgenland that is made from a blend of Syrah, Zweigelt and Blauburger. The nose is of excellent freshness and delicacy with notes that recall wild berries, red berries and some herbaceous and vegetable sensations. The sip is juicy, decidedly fruity and fresh, with very velvety tannins
“Querschnitt” is a creation of Weingut Kolfok that literally represents the meaning of its name on the label: a “panorama” of typically Austrian grapes, with a slight touch of internationality. Stefan Wellanschitz's interpretation gives life to a red wine composed of delicacy and fruity aromaticity, far from the more common and mediocre local vinifications of Rotburger: it recalls the personality and lightness of a high-quality Beaujolais cru, with a wise attention to the territory.
Rotburger “Querschnitt” is made by Weingut Kolfok from the homonymous black grape variety, which is the most widespread in Austria, cultivated in two small plots planted in the 1970s. It is vinified together with another equally popular indigenous grape, Blauburger. Both varieties were created in the 1920s by Dr. Zweigelt: the latter comes from a cross between Portugieser and Blaufränkisch, while the former originates from the cross between Blaufränkisch and Saint Laurent. The blend is completed by a percentage of Syrah of about 5% of the total. All the grapes are grown on the typical rocky soils of Burgenland, the the easternmost Austrian wine region, characterized by volcanic residues, schist, and clay, at altitudes approaching 500 meters above sea level. The harvest is done by hand, and in the cellar, half of the harvest is destemmed while the other half is left as whole clusters: inside steel tanks, a carbonic maceration is initiated, delicately extracting all the primary aromatic compounds. After a gentle pressing, the alcoholic fermentation is conducted by indigenous yeasts only, and the aging takes place over a period of 10 months in large used Austrian oak barrels, without any movement. Bottling is done without filtration or clarification.
Rotburger “Querschnitt” from Weingut Kolfok appears a beautiful ruby red with purple reflections. The aromas are intense and essentially woody, with clear sensations of small dark berries, notes of ferns and earth, vegetal hints of green grass, and floral notes of hibiscus. The taste reveals a substance vibrant with a ferrous minerality, characterized by vivid freshness and juiciness.completed by a delicate tannic structure: almost a reference to an alpine Morgon. A bottle that ideally accompanies a variety of mushroom dishes.
