CHIANTI CLASSICO RISERVA 'IL POGGIALE' CASTELLARE DI CASTELLINA 2020 DESCRIPTION

Chianti Classico Riserva "Il Poggiale" from the Castellare di Castellina winery is an elegant and complex red wine produced in Castellina in Chianti, in the province of Siena, Tuscany. It is a pleasant expression obtained from a blend of grapes in which Sangiovese, present almost in purity, joins small percentages of native grapes such as Canaiolo and Ciliegiolo. The vines, which have an average age of about 25 years, are trained, using the espalier method with upside-down guyot pruning, on beautiful hillsides located between 350 and 400 meters above sea level and characterized by soils with predominantly calcareous soils. The winery is a historic family-run business born in the 1970s from the passion and intuition of Paolo Panerai, who decided to focus on the enhancement of native grape varieties to produce great wines while respecting the Chianti Classico territory.

"Il Poggiale" Chianti Classico Riserva from Castellare di Castellina is made from carefully selected grapes harvested by hand in mid-October. The bunches, brought to the winery, are destemmed and gently crushed and then undergo alcoholic fermentation in stainless steel containers with frequent daily pumping over and maceration on the skins of about two weeks. This is followed by racking with pressing of the skins, after which the wine is aged in French oak barrels for a period of at least 12-18 months before being bottled and continues its maturation in the bottle for an additional 12 months before release.

Chianti Classico Riserva "Il Poggiale" from Castellare di Castellina shows a bright ruby red colour to the eye. Intense aromas of ripe red fruit and berries appear on the nose, including cherry, morello cherry, raspberry and currant, with floral notes of violet, spicy hints of sweet spices, including vanilla, and then veers into slight mineral hints. In the mouth, it is pungent, intense and enveloping, marked by a pleasant freshness and tannins that are present and well-integrated. This from the Castellare di Castellina winery is a fine, well-made red that delivers harmony sip after sip.
