CATARRATTO 'AREMI' CANTINE BARBERA 2021 DESCRIPTION

Catarratto 'Aremi' is a white wine with a Mediterranean face and an intense, rich profile, produced in Sicily in the Menfi area. The wine's name in Sicilian means gold and refers both to the colour in the glass and to the precious nectar of Catarratto, one of Sicily's oldest and most interesting white grape varieties. Its floral bouquet, fresh citrus aromas and exotic fruit nuances make it one of the island's most interesting wines, particularly suitable for pairing with seafood cuisine.

'Aremi' Catarratto represents a label of great Sicilian tradition. The grape variety is one of the varieties brought to the island by the Greeks during the first colonisation in the 7th-8th centuries B.C. and is mainly present in the western area, in the provinces of Trapani, Agrigento and Palermo. The Catarratto grapes of the Barbera estate come from a 35-year-old vineyard, less than a hectare in size, located a few hundred metres from the sea in the Belìce Mare district. The vines are planted on soils consisting of sand and clay of marine origin, with abundant pebbles and rich in iron minerals, which give them a dark colour. The grapes are harvested manually in mid-September. After destemming, spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts occurs in steel tanks, with manual punching-down 4-5 times a day and maceration on the skins for about 8 days. The wine matures in steel vats on the fine lees with periodic bâtonnage for about one year, also carrying out malolactic fermentation. The wine is bottled without clarification or filtration.

"Aremi" is a white wine that well represents the typicality of the Menfi terroir and its proximity to the coast. It is dense with aromas that express the sunny climate and the breath of the sea in its saline and mineral notes. The glass, it has a bright, golden-yellow colour. The olfactory profile is intense and complex, with floral scents, aromas of citrus peel, yellow fruit, tropical hints, hints of aromatic herbs from the Mediterranean maquis, almond paste and iodine hints. The taste is ample and rich, with generous and soft fruit, well balanced by a lively freshness with savoury tones.
