The Ferrara winery is among the most famous and quoted wineries in all of Irpinia. It is a classic family-run business, which for several generations has been dedicated to viticulture in the Frazione San Paolo in the municipality of Tufo. The Ferrara family has been present in these lands for five centuries, and the winery's origins date back to 1860, when the small property could only count on a little more than two hectares of vineyards. Today, the area of the estate covers a good 25 hectares, almost all in the municipal territory of Greco, except for a part located in Montemiletto and destined to the production of Aglianico. Currently, the management of the winery is in the hands of Gabriella, who takes care of the entire production process, from the vineyard to bottling, with the help of her husband Sergio and children Antonio and Lucia.
Irpinia is one of the most suitable areas of Campania for viticulture. Ancient Greek and Roman traditions have always made this region of our south one of the cradles of the vine, thanks to favorable soil and climate conditions. The area of Irpinia is rather mountainous and characterized by heterogeneous soils, mixing tuffs and sands of ancient volcanic origin, with clays, limestones and alluvial sediments. The climate is continental, rather cold and with significant temperature ranges between day and night temperatures. In these particular conditions, some local indigenous grape varieties have acclimatized very well, in particular Greco di Tufo, Fiano di Avellino and Aglianico, as well as Falanghina and Coda di Volpe: all very high quality grapes, capable of giving intense, elegant and very long-lived wines.
In particular, the area of the Greco di Tufo appellation, is located at an altitude between 450 and 600 meters above sea level, with magnificent and sunny exposures, mainly facing south. The soils are of medium texture, with abundant volcanic tuffs, very rich in minerals and well draining. Greco has found its cradle in this land and manages to produce grapes with very rich aromas, which even at full maturity retain considerable acidity. Selective harvests and simple vinifications, made with the utmost respect for the raw material, make it possible to offer wines capable of authentically interpreting the strong and unique personality of this magnificent territory.
