Penfolds Winery's Shiraz 'Bin 28' is a rich, intense red wine made from grapes grown primarily in Australia's famous Barossa Valley. Notes of ripe black fruit, hints of spice, dried fig and caramel stand out on the nose, while the palate is full, enveloping, with lovely acidity and velvety tannins. Goes well with red meat and game dishes
The ‘Bin 28’ Shiraz from the renowned winery Penfolds is an Australian interpretation of Syrah grapes known for its richness and concentration. This label was the first in the ‘Bin’ series, released back in 1959 as an expression of a single vineyard, Kalimna, located in the prestigious Barossa Valley and acquired by Penfolds in 1945. Today, this Shiraz is produced with grapes sourced from various Australian wine regions, primarily McLaren Vale and Barossa. As for the ‘Bin 28’ designation, it derives from the area of the cellar where historically this wine undergoes aging. Indeed, the term ‘Bin’ stands for “Batch Identification Number,” signifying the batch identification.
Penfolds Shiraz ‘Bin 28’ is a 100% Syrah sourced from vineyards in McLaren Vale, Barossa Valley, Padthaway, and Clare Valley, characterized by a rather warm climate. After harvest, the grapes are red vinified through alcoholic fermentation in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks with skin contact. For the subsequent aging phase lasting 12 months, new American oak barrels are used at 16%.
Visually, Penfolds ‘Bin 28’ Shiraz displays an intense cherry red color. On the nose, it reveals vivid and deep sensations of ripe black fruits, berries, dried figs, caramel, chocolate, and sweet spices. On the palate, the opulent richness and full body are well-supported by beautiful freshness and a smooth tannic structure, with a slight spicy aftertaste that emerges on the long finish. A New World Shiraz that pairs well with substantial dishes such as roasts or red meat stews, as well as aged cheeses.
