CILIEGIOLO 'VALLERANA ALTA' ANTONIO CAMILLO 2021 DESCRIPTION

"Vallerana Alta' is the pinnacle of expression for Ciliegiolo Maremmano according to Antonio Camillo. One name, one vine. While dedicating himself to different varieties, Antonio Camillo has made famous the character of a vine that over the years has perhaps been somewhat overshadowed by the more noble Tuscan grapes, known throughout the world. This man, who really takes the vineyard in his stride and has acquired an enviable familiarity with it, knows how to bring out the refinement of the Maremma through one of its symbolic vines. 'Vallerana Alta' is a label that brings together the best selection of Ciliegiolo from the cru of the same name. Antonio Camillo's work in the field is based on a strong respect for the environment. All agronomic practices that would create stress for the plant are reduced to a minimum and natural products are used for defence. Great attention is also paid to cellar practices, aimed at enhancing the expression of the vine and the terroir.

Antonio Camillo 'Vallerana Alta' is a pure Ciliegiolo from a single vineyard of about one hectare in the commune of Capalbio, at an altitude of 400 metres above sea level. The soil is clayey and has the peculiarity of being covered by a layer of red gravel. Harvesting is done manually, towards the end of September. Once in the cellar, the vinification process begins, consisting of a 30-day period of maceration and fermentation in cement vats. Ageing takes place in three stages: first in large 15 hl barrels for 12 months, then in cement for 3 months and finally in the bottle for a further 3 months.

Ciliegiolo 'Vallerana Alta' has a ruby red colour. The bouquet initially opens in fruity scents of cherry and floral hints of violet, before introducing a white spice and mineral traces. On the palate, the taste is balanced and full-bodied. The tannin is well managed, resulting in a silky smooth profile. An excellent persistence leaves the memory of a red with personality.
