Red 'Concerto di Fonterutoli' Castello di Fonterutoli - Mazzei 2021

Castello di Fonterutoli's Red 'Concerto di Fonterutoli' was the start of Mazzei's Supertuscan work. It combines Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon in a harmony that has earned it its musical name. The Sangiovese comes from the 'Scassi' vineyard at an altitude of 350 metres, on rocky, limestone soils, while the Cabernet Sauvignon grows in the small 'Brotine' plot, surrounded by oak trees. The nose reveals notes of undergrowth and black fruits, with pleasant spicy and vanilla hints resulting from maturation in small barrels. Rich and juicy on the sip, the structure and complex aromatic profile are supported by great warmth and persistence

RED 'CONCERTO DI FONTERUTOLI' CASTELLO DI FONTERUTOLI - MAZZEI 2021 DESCRIPTION

The Rosso 'Concerto di Fonterutoli' is a fine Supertuscan produced by the Chianti-based Castello di Fonterutoli - Mazzei that stands out for its complexity and structure. This label was first produced with the 1981 vintage, at a time when the Supertuscan phenomenon had not yet exploded, demonstrating the farsightedness of the Mazzei family, among the first to experiment with the combination of Sangiovese and the famous Bordeaux grape varieties.

Castello di Fonterutoli - Mazzei Rosso 'Concerto di Fonterutoli' originates from a blend of Sangiovese (80%) and Cabernet Sauvignon (20%), varieties grown on soils rich in skeleton deriving from the disintegration of alberese and galestro rocks, located at an altitude between 340 and 350 metres above sea level. Harvesting is done by hand towards the end of September and is followed by separate red vinification for the two varieties, with alcoholic fermentation taking place in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, with 14-18 days of maceration on the skins. The two masses are then placed to mature for 18 months in small French oak barrels, tonneau in the case of the Sangiovese and barrique for the Cabernet Sauvignon. After blending, the wine rests for 3 months in cement tanks and after a few more months in the bottle it is finally ready for release.

In the glass, the 'Concerto di Fonterutoli' Rosso di Castello di Fonterutoli - Mazzei shows a garnet red colour with a ruby heart. The ample and complex aromatic bouquet carries fruity sensations of blackcurrant and blackberry, hints of undergrowth and hints of sweet spices such as vanilla. On the palate it emerges for its powerful structure and juicy freshness, as well as for its tight tannic texture and fine but very intense progression.
