Valtellina Superiore 'Valgella' Fay 2020

Sandro Fay's Valtellina Superiore Valgella 'Costa Bassa' Valtellina Superiore Valtellina is a bottle that can exceptionally combine complexity and dynamism, satisfying the senses yet never being heavy. The name 'Costa Bassa' refers to the vineyards from which the clusters come, which begin at the bottom of the valley and reach up to 450 meters above sea level. The plots are located within the Valgella subzone, the easternmost of Valtellina's five micro-areas, characterized by deeper soils and lower levels of rainfall. Its appellation derives from the dialect term "valgel," which in turn refers to the small streams with which the area is particularly rich.

Valtellina Superiore Valgella Sandro Fay 'Costa Bassa' is made from only Nebbiolo grapes, locally called Chiavennasca, grown on sandy-loam soils. The vines are located below 450 meters above sea level and have full southern exposure. Harvesting is done by hand in crates, usually during the second half of October, and the ensuing alcoholic fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks. Once the fermentation process is complete, the wine is transferred to large oak casks for complete malolactic fermentation, followed by 12 months of maturation before bottling.

Sandro Fay Valtellina Superiore Valgella 'Costa Bassa' is a brilliant ruby red colour. The nose expands on sweetly fruity perceptions of cherry and berries, followed by floral, balsamic and slightly spicy hints. Equilibrated and harmonious, the sip is marked by lively freshness, important structure and silky tannins.
